The Promenade: Shelter, Church, Home

Post by Adian Novar »

[b:1amijyle]PLEASE READ:[/b:1amijyle][/size:1amijyle]

Characters who live here are of course intimately familiar with these rituals and activities. As of this writing I have not developed a storyline for this thread, but it is a work in progress. Players, I would appreciate it if you sent me a PM before you post here describing who your character is and what they are doing there. Please limit yourself to only one or two characters. More becomes difficult to keep track of. Recommended level (for the moment) is 5-7.

I shall be following this post with a cast list of significant personalities in the Promenade as soon as I get done compiling it. Suggestions are welcome.

The setting is intended to be in the Promenade of Eilistraee, one of the holiest sites and the first of the few permanent temples dedicated to her. The Promenade is a set of caverns and tunnels on the third level of what is known as "The Deepest Dungeon", AKA: "Undermountain". The Promenade occupies a large, underground, ruined city east and north of the lawless city of Skullport. The single largest cavern, with a ceiling of over a hundred feet, houses 33 small blocks of two-and-three-story buildings that can house up to two or three families at once...though more than half of them are still unoccupied.

To the east of this grand living area there is a sort of central "hub" cavern called the Cavern of Song that has been cleared entirely of buildings and now sports carefully cultivated glowing fungi, with a large pool in the south end supplied by a magically generated spring. The spring serves as a source of water for the temple, while to pool is used as a common bath. At the north end of this "hub" is an alcove is what is known as "Eilistraee's Mound", the site of a divine battle between the goddess and an avatar of Ghaundadaur. Instead of a great pit where sacrifices were thrown there is now a massive stone "plug", the top of which has been carved into a likeness of Eilistraee by dwarven sculptors.

The east walls of the "hub" lead to the other three main caverns of the Promenade: The northernmost of them is the Hall of Healing. The hallwas at one time a temple to Ghaundadaur and a temple to Tyr, the god of Justice centuries before that. The single remnant of the Tyr temple...a golden set of scales, hangd from the ceiling. This hall is both a sick-nursery and general hospital. There is a fixed one-way teleport from level six that will deliver neutral and good aligned igroups straight to the Hall of Healing. The temple extends healing and treatment to all who arrive, regardless of race, offering a hand of friendship often denied to those of the Shunned Races. There is a second bath here, also fed by a similar magical spring.

It should be mentioned here that healing is, strictly speaking, not free. The price of these services can be simple such as a new song for the worshippers to sing to their deity, or one days work for every day spent in the hall. Supplies or treasure are accepted but are frowned on since they are helpful for the followers and do little to "benefit the Lady".

The middle cavern has been fully restored as a barracks and armory with the remaining space devoted to storehouses of food and medical supplies. The current garrison is made up of 24 drow (nine females), nine dwarves, 27 humans (12 females), and four halflings. These troops are ultimately under the command of the High Priestess, usually through her lieutenants

The southernmost cavern is the Priestess''s Ward. The largest building, a 4-story structure carved into the east wall, is the domicile of the hight priestess and her consort, Qilue Veladorn and Elkanrat Ilium. It's stepped terraces are kept well-illuminated by glowing lichens and glowglobes of green and blue hues. The two-story central building is the temple's house for honored guests; the larder is well-stocked with food items from all over the Realms and the halfling cook, Meryl Vyrmoth, can make seemingly any dish imaginable. The other domiciles are occupied by the Dark Ladies (priestesses), Maids (acolytes and aspirants to the clergy who have not completed training), and the temple's lay servants. Visitors who want to keep a low profile are hidden away to rooms deep in this warren of caves, buildings, and winding passages. More than one curious visitor has discovered that the Maids sometimes spy on visitors from many secret passages that entwine around the quarters.

Day-to-day worship is a mixture of practical work and devotions. Unlike many temples, practical work (farming food, chores, diplomacy regarding the surrounding areas) takes precedence over rituals.

Daily rituals starts with an informal gathering of everyone for bathing andf chatter. At length Qilue or a ranking priestess will conjyre [i:1amijyle]moonfire[/i:1amijyle] and begin the Charge: The opening recitation for the many rituals of the clergy. The Charge can even be faintly heard in Skullport, serving as a beacon of hope for those lost there or around the third level.

Councils are always secular and free-speaking meetings. The Council discusses business and practical matters with all priestesses having equal vocie regardless of rank. Informality and candor are the order of the day. The Council is closed by s prayer to Eilistraee and then everyone disperses for work. After four or so hours, priestesses and aspriants not engaged in essential work gather in the Cavern of Song for the Grand Chorus. This is the grandest daily ritual of worship of the Lady: An ongoing celebration of vocal music.

During this Chorus, shafts of milky white moonlight appear in the cavern, as well as several other places in Undermountain. During one of these events it is possible for a priestess and all she touches to be instantly transported among the webs of moonlight to anyplace the moonlight reaches including the surface.

The Chorus is followed by a brief rest period, then the priestesses practice dance and song until (usually four to six hours later) a senior Priestess wanders about the Promenade singing "The Call to Eilistraee", a haunting melody that brings the faithful back into the Cavern of Song. Once again there is another Charge and shorter meeting of the Council. Afterward the priestesses disperse, taking their evening meals in small, informal, ever-changing "tables" (informal eating groups that don't necessarily have an actual table) about the temple area.

This is followed by a sort of play-and-work period in which all the faithful do repair work, storage, food preparation, and the like until they end the cycle by taking to their beds. During this time the Chosen make their most important prayers of the day: Personal, solitary Flame Songs.

A priestess performs a Flame Song whenever she is moved to do so, dancing around a candle or other flame. The song to the goddess is personal, and ends when the flame dies. It is the height of rudeness to interrupt a priestess in a Flame Song, though outsiders and nonbelievers are usually forgiven for their ignorance. A visitor to the Promenade can hear the eeriely beautiful echoes of half a dozen or more of these solos at once, drifting down the various passages and in side caverns and rooms.

One thing that visitors sometimes forget, though the inhabitants never do, is that defense is also a high priority. Warriors are trained daily, the best (of either gender) becoming Protectors of the Song. Undermountain is a dangerous place and the guards of the outer passages are on constant alert. Making it past one of them unnoticed is a major feat indeed. All the priestesses are capable of combat to one degree or another, as several would-be marauders have learned to their cost. Bladedancing, an elven martial art, is taught here as well as several other arts of combat.

The greatest relics of the Promenade are the [i:1amijyle]Singing Swords[/i:1amijyle] granted to the temple. In [i:1amijyle]very[/i:1amijyle] rare circumstances they might loan (never give) one out to someone going on a very dangerous and important mission. If something happens to one of these bearers, the drow typically hire adventurers retrieve them. It is said that the Lady watches over anyone carrying one of her blades, and if the bearer is not faithful--or at least sympathetic to her--she directs her followers by sending both the bearer's appearance and warning dreams to them.

[b:3gl5w0a7]Cast of Characters:[/b:3gl5w0a7][/size:3gl5w0a7]

Qilue Veladorn, High Priestess of the
Promenade, Chosen of the Chosen:

Qilue is strikingly beautiful. She stands 6' tall, has silver hair that reaches almost to her ankles, and customarily wears a robe (powers, if any, unknown) that flickers with a shifting, silvery glow. She customarily carries a blast scepter and can summon an unsheathed singing sword into her hand at will. Qilue has a firm, commanding, yet warm manner and is usually gentle and encouraging in her speech and dealings. She has a mischievous streak, however (often betrayed by an uplifted eyebrow), and there are persistent rumors that she is linked to the Harpers.

Elkantar Iluim, Right Hand of the Lady:

Qilues consort commands the Protectors of the Song, the Promenade.s temple guards. He is a proud, graceful, sleek drow who exults in acrobatic combat, the love of Qilue, and the growth of the Promenade. He hates to look foolish and dislikes using missile weapons, preferring to close hand-to-hand with a foe.

Elkantar is devoted to Qilue and will do anything-even die-for her. He is a careful, masterful tactician and a crafty guard commander. Many are the adventurers who thought they'd won past a temple guard undetected, only to find themselves in an ambush. Elkantar isn't eager to attack intruders without first finding out who or what they are, and why they've come, but he can be considered fearless if encountered within the temple. The Protectors revere and obey him unhesitatingly. He holds grudges and never forgets a face but is also a staunch ally who won't hesitate to plunge into danger to aid a friend or a stranger who has aided him or fellow drow of the temple.

Arrikett Uruth, Hand of the Protectors:

This bristling, brawling, snarling subcommander of the temple guard behaves more like a dwarf than the halfling he is, probably because he has dwarven blood in his recent ancestry (infravision and direction-sensing abilities mark his halfling descent as Stoutish). Arrikett is belligerent, brawny, and a head taller than most halflings. He customarily wears tattered, battered clothes, a[i:3gl5w0a7] girdle of storm giant strength[/i:3gl5w0a7], and [i:3gl5w0a7]boots of striding and springing[/i:3gl5w0a7]. He scorns armor. If convinced of the need, Arrikett will grudgingly don a halfling-sized suit of chain mail + 1, but nothing will make him use any sort of helm or shield.

In battle, Arrikett wields a short sword of quickness and daggers (he has at least five hidden about his person at all times). He has adopted the drow hand crossbow, with which he fires nonpoisoned bolts.

Arrikett is often moved to tears by the beauty of the temple songs, but he is really more at home in a rollicking good fight. He is the guard commander most likely to be met on wide patrols, scouting the passages and caverns of Undermountain farthest from the Promenade, at the head of 6-8 drow and human soldiers (equally divided among sexes).

Iljrene Ahhruyn, Hand of the Protectors:

The only powerful priestess of the Promenade to also be a subcommander in the Protectors, Iljrene is a drow of deceivingly soft, cuddly looks. She customarily conceals her armor beneath high-fashion gowns and sometimes goes into Skullport with a basket over one slim arm to buy sundries (with backup guards shadowing her from behind, in case she needs aid). Few in Skullport bother her these days, since she became known as the slayer of a Hired Horror who presumed too much apparent weakness in her.

Iljrene collects stuffed toys and dolls, has been known to squeal with delight at a gift, joke, or flowery compliment, and can be embarrassingly affectionate. Those who mistake this "little girl" act for weakness often don't live long enough to regret it. In battle, she seems immune to pain, her wits lighting-fast and her icy calm unshakable. Piergeiron, Lord of Waterdeep, once called her "the most dangerous battlemaster I have ever laid eyes on in all Toril."

Adian Novar and a small band of young children survived the tunnels of the Underdark and made their way into Undermountain thanks--it is said--to intervention by the goddess herself. The group of children were more or less raised communally, though Adian regards Qilue Veladorn as his primary maternal figure. Today the little group is fairly well-known in the Promenade since their origins very much match the original calling of Veladorn herself when she was bought to this cave system. Though not directly related by blood, they regard one another as brothers and sisters and any will jump to the aid of any of the others.

Adian's "Family":

Akor'ace: The eldest female of the group, the magically talented Akor'ace balances her talent with her devotion for her chosen goddess. She stands taller than the rest of her adopted family and is a sort of "big sister" to pretty much everyone she interacts with. She is not above teasing the other members of her family, and extends that only to people to whom she becomes personally close.

Alexyra: This young female is "The Quiet One" among the others, introverted and generally shy, she is most comfortable around her brothers and sisters. She also has the sweetest voice of the group and is being looked at to lead some of the choirs...her shyness being the only real stumbling block. While she is trained like the other priestesses in combat, she far prefers to use her prayers and support her allies over direct conflict.

Maydiira: Maydiira is the most aggressive and assertive of the little family. Hot-tempered and enrgetic, she is a natural with the Lady's chosen weapon. Her voice is adequate for the duties of a priestess, but she prefers the Protector role of her duties. Time should eventually mellow her, but for now she's up for any physical challenge...and if there isn't one she'll make one for herself. Alexyra is something of a foil for her, blunting her impulsiveness and providing much-needed wisdom.

Suspavin: The oldest male of the group, Suspavin is an apprentice Bladedancer and a candidate for membership among the Protectors of the Song. While a talented martial artist, he is more of a follower than a leader, aware of his limitations and content with what he is. He has his moments, however, when he might say something that will turn out to be precisely the right thing to say or do. These moments of unexpected wisdom have given him a sort of "philosipher swordsman" reputation.

Shiridia: The mischivious one of the bunch, Shridia is the sly wisecracker and prankster. She's also something of the baby of the group, even though Adian and G'eldfryn are slightly younger than she by only a couple of years. She is a naturally talented scout and rogue and is starting formal training. Her face is sort of made for sly smiles, but can switch to wide-eyed innocence in an instant.

G'eldfryn: The middle brother, he is a classic "pretty boy" with a sharper mind than many people would expect. He has a weakness for women. All women. Most of the Promenade extend a kind of veiled, amused tolerance at his antics. No matter how many times he gets shot down, he still thinks of himself as a "ladies man". Depsite his formidable intellect and extensive reading, he fails to recognize that he has all the romantic subtlety of a sledgehammer.

Adian Novar: Adian is the youngest male of the group and the only one whose House of birth is known--he was wearing the remains of their colors when he arrived. Of all his family members he is the one most directly touched by the Dark Maiden. His soul was deemed worthy of the powers that she eventually gave him, the powers of a paladin. It is believed that Adian has some sort of special destiny writ for him by Eilistraee, and so he was trained as best the Promenade's inhabitants could. Naive and kind, Adian is a sensitive soul in a warrior's body. It remains to be seen what his destiny is...or whether or not he survives it.

Morning came to the Promenade. Morning being a relative concept in Undermountain, it was called 'morning' by virtue of the majority of the populace waking up. Men and women headed for the Chamber of Song and the common bathing pool. It was a time of informal chatter, with no ranks or heirarchies. Just people getting ready for the chores of the day.

There were always thing that needed to be done, from simple faming in the fungi gardens to clearing out rubble from the eastern caverns to combat training for the warriors and dance training for everyone else. This was the quiet period before breakfast and the first Charge. For the moment, though, there were stories to tell and friendships to affirm.

Adian helped Cinder to the baths. With the twins she was carrying being so close to arrival, the bath as a great source of relief, making the weight easier to bear and settling the unseen twins from their usual energetic movements. His brothers and sisters rarely missed an opportunity to tease either of them about her burden, but were also eager to lend a hand whenever they were genuinely needed.

"It's the least we can do," G'eldfryn said. "It took the entire Promenade to raise all of us. We ought to be able to pass that along to the newest members of the family."

Morning. Cycle of day was soon to start again, like many days before. Some of the inhabitants of Promenade only woke up from trance of reverie. Some never slept at all.
Relatively small living quarters shaped in stone cavern was crammed in at least quarter of space by big bookshelves, filled with lot of books, scrolls and tomes. They were not dusty, kept tidy by most frequent user and owner of it, who was sitting on willow chair behind table not far from them. Few would be surprised by interest that was invested in studying current parchment without any hint of it having magical or any other mysterious knowledge. Other would notice that this reader was very young girl in not remarkable light white night gown. Most of those not used to be visiting underground secret temple, however, would be profoundly shaken by seeing a drow.
Red eyes quickly checked each line illuminated by two balls of dim light over each of her shoulders, sometimes narrowing, rarely widening, clearly captivated by content. Eventually, they scanned last word, corners of mouth moving cheeks in satisfied smile. Lithe hands took care to slowly roll up parchment and put a fastening silken thread, putting it onto bookshelf between other yellowed manuscripts.
Young drow stood up with little stretch of shoulders and dismissal of illumination, both spheres disappearing in air without a trace. Closing eyelids and scratching her head with long white hair, little wannabe scholar already stood in front of her private library, trying to decide which text she should research next before familiar sounds alarmed her pointed ears. Suddenly crouching, child carefully looked out into entrance, wooden door creaking and leaving small crevice to see. Voice of calm relaxed chatter and nonchalant steps told her that it was time.
Dark elf turned in direction opposite to her reading desk, where was positioned sleeping bed. It was not empty - on it was lying a woman of same kind, obsidian black skin covered by sleeveless shirt and shorts of grey cotton. Hand reaching out to wake up her mother, youngster changed her mind and chanted. [casts Dancing Lights]
Six balls of light appeared in air with flashes, spiralling and orbiting in chaotic patterns. Soon they came closer to face of entranced female, dazzling in quick moves in front of her nose. It cringed when light sensitive eyes were forced to open by bursts of light.
"You are so grounded, young lady.[/color:z2yw3ehq]"
Awake from walking through memories past, drow woman sat up, waving off littler spheres and covering her eyes. "Come on, quit it! I am up, up![/color:z2yw3ehq]"
After discomforting illumination ceased, priestess brushed through her neck length hair with finger with sigh before looking at girl.
"It is an improvement since last time, but still, don't do that again. Ah, who am I kidding, you won't stop, right?[/color:z2yw3ehq]"
"Yes![/color:z2yw3ehq]" Vigorously, young elf nodded.
Shaking her head, Eowiewiel got her slippers and stood up, rubbing her face on the way.
Opening door, she stepped out, pointing at floor and motioning to come closer. Child knew what was on parent's mind. Soon both of them stood in line side to side, not giving attention to other passing men and women.
"You do twenty five jumps if I win. I get you a new book if I lose.[/color:z2yw3ehq]" Both put foot in front, preparing for jolt.
"On my mark... Ready... Hey, your shoe got dirty.[/color:z2yw3ehq] Confusion momentarily broken on kid's face as she looked down.
"GO![/color:z2yw3ehq]"
Too late to see ruse, daughter had to work game to catch up with her mother, both drow running toward bathing pool room, full speed on without care for obstacles in their path.

"Hel-lo," G'eldfryn said, his eyes immediately caught by the movement of the racing mother and daughter. His eyes were on the young mother, of course. "And what a lovely start to the day."

There was a soft [i:3qrvjtc7]whap[/i:3qrvjtc7] as Maydiira slapped the back of his head...none too lightly.

"Hey!" G'eldfryn objected, rubbing the back of his head.

"You just leave her alone," the taller drow said, looking down at him severely. "She had her hands full with her daughter, she has no time for you."

"I can make that change," G'eldfryn grumbled, but he subsided. One did not keep going after one has been smacked by Maydiira unless one didn't mind a broken bone or two.

Being ahead of her contestant, Eo allowed herself to lower her speed and shorten distance, taking in account difference in age. "Isn't that cheating?" Adian asked no one in particular.

"Did someone make up a set of rules when I wasn't looking or something?" Maydiira said with a shrug. "They're having fun, and that little girl has a lot of talent for her age. She should encourage it."

"Don't look now," Akor'ace said as she followed the path of their race. "But a few hazards have just appeared in their path."

"Hazards" taking the form of Arrikett Uruth, the halfling Protector. As hazards went he was slightly more dangerous than a tumbling boulder.

Cinder waddled down the hall leaning on Adian she quikly took his hand and placed it on her tummy.
" Did you feel that movement? " she asked him, " it feels like someone is rolling over to get comfortable although it must be getting increasingly difficult to do every day.

When giant wide obstacle appeared in her path, drow got confused. They did not let mini-giants into bath, as far as she knew. Recognizing the Hand of the Protector, woman stammered. "Oh, for the love of...[/color:1rynnc62]"
Crossing his hands, enormous (for their standards) halfling stood in her path. "Stop your blasted running! How many times should I do this?"
Feeling short fast steps behind in hot pursuit, adventuress shown all white teeth in wide smile. "If you let me pass, I will sing my newest song this evening.[/color:1rynnc62]"
"No deal." Snarling, brawny dwarf-hin tapped his leg, not showing any wish to let her pass.
Already kid was closing in. There was no time to waste.
"Fine.[/color:1rynnc62]" Turning back, divine agent relaxed, waving hand to her daughter. Suddenly, quick chant was thrown, gesture made and rift in air was about to bring something. [casts Summon Monster I]
Protector put his hand on hilt of shortsword, but was surprised when all that was summoned was a white furred primate, small monkey with silver fur and few black lines on it. As soon as it materialized, priestess snatched it and thrown at guardian's face. "In your face![/color:1rynnc62]"
Looking back, she screamed. "Now![/color:1rynnc62]"
Both of them continued race to the bath door, this time having third contestant - big angry hin.

Adian's attention was distracted instantly. The farther along she got the more anxious he was becoming. Twins were rare among elves, and Adian was starting to worry for their--and Cinder's--health. This manifested as intense protectiveness, making him shift his attention if she showed the slightest sign of discomfort. Never mind that he was in a place full of healers, or that his perpetual distraction was getting him beaten rather badly in his training.

G'eldfryn, meanwhile, saw a chance to play hero. He got up quickly and moved to intercept the bad-tempered halfling, making "hey, let's calm down a bit now" gestures. He even bravely stepped right into the oncoming halfling's path.

The result was quite predictable.

G'eldfryn went flying as the halfling shoved the lighter drow aside. This was not an exaggeration: G'eldfryn arced several feet before crashing amid a handful of bystanders.

"Idiot," Maydiira said with a shrug even as Alexyra climbed out of the water to go to her brother's aid.

From amidst the crowd of bystanders that G'eldfryn crashed into came a soft chuckle. A very thin, almost skeletal, hand reached down to pick up the boy and stand him back on his feet. "Honestly, Adian. I come to visit, hearing the news that dear Cinder is expecting even more children, and I find this one lounging about?" The male drow, to whom the arm was attached to stepped forward, and waved at Adian. His long white hair was tied behind his head, forming a rather sharp looking braid that was tucked under the belt of his midnight black robe. The Zyzaat's face was likewise very thin, almost skeletal, and instead of the common drow crimson eyes, his irises were a bright gold. "G'eldfryn shows promise, and I will not give up on trying to get him as my apprentice, my old friend."
A fight need not end with the death of participant. A fight also ends when the desire to do violence is gone.

" You worry too much " Cinder said sensing Adains concern " The midwife says everything is going very well and if she is not concerned nor should you be. " she insisted. " though Cinder was quit small to be carrying twins the midwife was watching carefully and so far things were going well.

G'eldfryn stood and glowered at Zyzzat.

"I've told you before, if you aren't a hot girl I'm not interested."

"Are you really that shallow, G'eldfryn?" Alexyra asked as she examined him for injury. Outside of a few bumps and scrapes the young elf was fine.

"A fine thing to say about your brother," he sniffed.

In truth G'eldfryn didn't really trust the strange mage, regardless of Adian's friendship with him. The shallow act was a mere excuse: He didn't feel like explaining his reasons to his baby brother. Adian was a trusting sort. Perhaps too much so. Zyzzat had yet to really prove himself in G'eldfryn's eyes.

"I have little say in whom he chooses as a teacher, Zyzzat," Adian said. "I can only give him your name and a reccomendation. Welcome to the Promenade once again. How goes the surface world?""

Zyzaat chuckled at the simplicity in the boy's world, it reminded the old wizard of himself at one point in time, "We shall see G'eldfryn. Magic always draws in people like you and I, even if it is at different times." He stepped past the two children and walked over to Adian, shaking his hand firmly, "I am not really sure. I haven't been to the surface since our last escapade there..." He gave the paladin a mischievous wink, "You know me, I cannot contain myself when presented with a new mystery. And I have made quite a few interesting advances into magic. And I've only died once, all in all, the past time has been kind to me."
A fight need not end with the death of participant. A fight also ends when the desire to do violence is gone.
